Admission requirements

The Arizona Board of Regents outlines undergraduate admission requirements for Arizona’s public universities. Requirements are designed to ensure students are adequately prepared to thrive in college.

Review the following criteria and then visit your schools of interest to review any additional requirements for admission.

Arizona public universities requirements

The following is required for admission:

  • High school diploma 
  • 4 years English language arts
  • 4 years math (Algebra 1-2, geometry, Algebra 3-4 and an advanced math class for which Algebra 3-4 is a prerequisite)
  • 3 years lab science, one year each from three of the following: biology, chemistry, Earth science or physics (an integrated science or an advanced science may be substituted for one required course) 
  • 2 years social studies, including one year of American history
  • 2 years of the same foreign language 
  • 1 year fine arts or a combination of two semesters of high school fine arts or Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Assured admission

Students from regionally accredited high schools who complete the core competencies with a 3.0 GPA (4.0 = A) will be guaranteed admission to Arizona’s public universities.


Application fee waiver

Arizona residents may request an application fee waiver if paying the admission application fee is a financial hardship. Details are in the university applications.

Arizona community college requirements

Admission to a community college in Arizona may be granted to any person who meets at least one of the following criteria:
  • High school diploma or Certificate of Completion
  • GED
  • Is 18 years of age or older and demonstrated evidence of potential success at the community college level
  • Is a transfer student in good standing from another college or university

Standardized testing (SAT/ACT)

While not required for admission to any of Arizona’s public universities, most students take the standardized tests through their high school during spring of junior year.

ASU does not require either test for admission, but scores may be submitted for course placement or as supplemental information.

The University of Arizona does not require either test for admission to the university, the honors college or for merit scholarship eligibility, but scores may be submitted for course placement at orientation or to help fulfill core competency requirements.
