Applying for financial aid

The Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) is the application you will need to complete to apply for federal, state and institutional financial aid.

The process is fairly straightforward and there are many step-by-step videos and many local high schools host FAFSA nights where advisors walk you and your family through it. Be sure to ask your counselor if this is an option near you.

The FAFSA is free

Due to major changes being implemented to simplify the FAFSA, it will open in December 2023 for the 2024-2025 school year. The sooner you complete it, the better as some aid is first-come, first-served. You will need to complete a new FAFSA each year you wish to be considered for financial aid. After this year, the FAFSA will return to its usual opening of Oct. 1 each year.

The 2024-2025 FAFSA will open in Dec. 2023.

You should never pay to complete the FAFSA. Use studentaid.gov to complete your FAFSA application. It is the only secure and encrypted site that the federal government provides for students to file the FAFSA. If you don’t have a computer, you may be able to use one at a library, school, or attend a FAFSA event in your community.
